- A Midvaal man has given away a hectare of his land
- He hopes it would be used for farming to help feed the poor
- He was inspired by another man who started a garden outside his home
A man in Midvaal, Gauteng, has given away a hectare of his land to help feed the hungry in his community.
Sipho Simelane posted the announcement on Facebook on 24 November. He shared pictures of the land and said:
My family would like to give land for FREE "1 HECTARE (10,000 SQUARE METRES) of agricultural land" to people who would love to farm or start a Community Garden Project.
He said he was inspired by another man named Johan Scott, who recently started a small vegetable garden outside his home to help the poor in his neighbourhood.
Sipho invited individuals, families, churches or even companies with corporate social initiatives to take up the offer and make a difference in people's lives.
He further explained that he is not a farmer but would like to see the land used.
His offer has received praise and some have already indicated willingness to take it up. See some reactions below.
