Many are left wondering whether the Mugabe family will remain in Zimbabwe since Robert has been overruled.

The family seems to have disappeared into thin air.

A picture doing the rounds on social media shows Robert and Grace Mugabe looking rather dismal. The image gives no clue to their location or who took it though.

It was confirmed on Wednesday by South Africa’s department of international relations and cooperation that the couple have not yet applied for asylum.

For this reason it seems highly unlikely at this point in time that they will be moving to South Africa to be closer to their sons.

Mugabe has not been seen in public once since he avoided impeachment proceedings and resigned abruptly.

Last week the former president was confined to his home in Harare and was later moved to State House where another picture surfaced of him meeting with the military and negotiators.

He was then seen at a university graduation ceremony at the Zimbabwe Open University. This was the first time he was seen in public since being put under house arrest.

Briefly.co.za gathered that, if some reports can be believed, Mugabe then took a trip to Zambia with Kenneth Kaunda, that nation’s former president.

At the time, Nick Mangwana, the leader of Zanu-PF's London branch, posted online: "We don't normally blog rumours here. But there are strong indications that president Mugabe left for Zambia with president Kaunda. Hopefully to allow a smooth transition."

Grace Mugabe remains as difficult to trace as she was after she assaulted Gabrielle Engels at a hotel in South Africa when she went to visit her sons earlier this year.

Gucci Grace, the former first lady, was said to have fled to Namibia after the military took over the country, but that is yet to be confirmed.

Mugabe’s sons, who are famous for posting about their lavish lifestyles on social media, have been keeping a much lower profile than usual.

Merely a week before Zimbabwe’s takeover Chatunga Mugabe posted a video of himself pouring champagne over his expensive watch. He was with his brother Robert Jr and friends at a party.

The Huffington Post shares that as soon as it became known their father had been kicked out of his position, the brothers were reminded that they are political activists so they turned to social media to share videos of their dad denouncing military intervention.
