Footballers are known for being highly paid, particularly if they land themselves in a big club. It is surprising to discover that some soccer players who spent half their lives making money hand over fist end up stone broke after a few years into retirement.

1. Philemon Masinga
Philemon Masinga rose to fame when he scored a match-winning goal which earned South Africa a spot at the 1998 Soccer World Cup. He invested his soccer winnings into various business and was soon a multimillionaire. Masinga went from rich and powerful to stone broke, so much so that he sold his mansion to move back in with his mom in Soweto.
2. Steve Lekoelea
Steve Lekoelea chose to go into early retirement and soon after he cut ties with his clubs his financial problems started. He splurged all his hard earned money on parties and in a very short time he was bankrupt.
Thembinkosi Fanteni enjoyed the good life, a bit too much and overspent on international products for their status. He blew his cash on women and cars and was living the dream. This soon turned into a nightmare as his bank account reached zero.
4. Junaid Hartley
Junaid Hartley was a sad and strange case, he spent all his money on lawyers trying to get out of his Orlando Pirates contract. Once free he was broke and failed to restart his football career.
5. Jabu Mahlangu
Jabu Mahlangu was the poster boy for a rags to riches story, his talent for football got him out of the township and into the high life. Unfortunately, his fame and fortune ran out when he spent all his cash on partying. He had a change of luck when he was cast on the telenovela The Queen.
