Opinion: Your friend is cheating on her husband and you know. What do you do?

Editor's note: - Your best friend deserves your respect and loyalty but you also have an obligation to do the right thing. Briefly.co.za editor, Stefan Mack, has a look at this tricky question posted on quora.com to see if there is a right answer.

If you find out that your best friend is in a relationship with someone who isn't their spouse what do you do? Do you keep quiet because it's your friend or do you tell the spouse. He has a right to know?

You want your friend to trust you and share each others secrets but you may not want to get caught up in her personal life with her husband.

So what should you do?

Just imagine if it were you being cheated on, how would you want to find out by accident or if someone told you about it?

It is a delicate situation and your friend definitely doesn't want you telling their husband.

If you do tell their spouse you may very well lose your friend. Alternatively keeping quiet while your friend cheats make you a partner in the crime and make you just as guilty as her.

A possible solution is to prompt your friend into telling their spouse the truth, to come clean and face the music. This might not work and your friend might drift away.

Good advice

Relationship expert John Gray has some good advice for just such a situation. You shouldn't drive yourself insane over a choice that your friend has made and it may be a lose-lose situation. In the end, you need to decide what to do, either tell the partner, keep quiet or try and convince your friend to do the right thing.
