- Geldenhuys took his business he started in his kitchen to amazing heights
- His initial turnover was R20 000 now USN makes R1-billion a year
- His can-do attitude and refusal to give up has made him the success he is today
It took Albe Geldenhuys 18 years but he has done it, he took his small business which he ran out of his kitchen and turned it into a business which makes over a billion Rand a year.
Geldenhuys managed to turn his dream into reality through a mixture of clever decisions, silly mistakes and a tireless ambition to be the best.
When he started selling his homemade fitness supplements he was not picky, he sold to friends, family members and people he met at the gym. It was when he started selling to Blue Bulls rugby players that started getting his product the right attention.
"I targeted anyone. I had no strategy beyond just sell, sell, sell,” he recalls. His lack of a plan ended up working as supplement shops started contacting him and word spread.
When Geldenhuys started USN the business was running from hand to mouth, every cent he made he reinvested.
The business started to grow and Geldenhuys was able to keep his profits high and overheads low while he operated out of his kitchen.
It was when he approached ChemPure as a partner that USN started to take off. The company agreed to help the small business grow and within four months USN went from making R20 000 a month to R160 000.
One of the secrets to Geldenhuys' success, in the beginning, was that he was tenacious about sending out invoices on time and hunting down late payments.
Since then his business has grown by leaps and bounds, at one point USN had become too large to handle and Geldenhuys had to expand his staff.
He made some costly mistakes on the way and learnt the hard way what worked and what didn't.
Today USN is stronger than ever and has a global footprint in the fitness industry.
